As Indians, we have been brought up to believe that the elderly know best. And it's true, isn't it? They have, after all, experienced life way more than you have and from respect to hope and faith, they can teach you a lot about many things. And while we do believe that they deserve our respect and love every single day, today, you can show them a tad bit more of just that!

International Day of Older Persons is observed every year on October 1st to focus on issues that affect the aged, such as dementia and the abuse of old individuals. The United Nations General Assembly voted to establish this date as the International Day of Older Persons back in 1990. This day is similar to the National Grandparents Day in the United States and Canada and also Respect for the Aged Day in Japan.

The number of Indians over the age of 60 is at an all-time high comprising of 8.6% of the country's population. We need to hence make sure that enough attention is given to elderly issues and it is imperative to make the country an inclusive one. One that actively integrates the participation of the elderly in communities across the country.
