Practising the art of yoga regularly has immense benefits both physically and mentally. Since International Yoga Day is upon us ( it is observed annually on June 21), learn about how it can improve your health.

1. Reduces stress: Need to relax? Multiple studies have found certain yoga poses can significantly reduce the secretion of cortisol, a stress hormone.A study conducted on women who reported feeling emotionally distressed found a three-month yoga program helped improve their mood as well as reduce stress, exhaustion and depression.

2. May reduce inflammation: Very high levels of inflammation in the body can increase the risk of serious health issues like diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Finding ways to reduce inflammation can improve your health and lower your risk of serious illnesses. A 2015 study found yoga helped lower levels of inflammatory markers in participants.

3. May improve heart health: Taking care of your heart is crucial to maintain your overall health. Researchers say yoga can help improve the health of your heart and reduce your risk of heart disease. One study found yoga helped reduce blood pressure levels in participants who were over 40-years-old.

4. May tackle symptoms of depression: Constant stress and anxiety can lead to depression. While there are various ways to treat depression, yoga has been found to be effective in tackling the mental health issue. A study conducted on participants in an alcohol dependence program found a type of yoga called Sudarshan Kriya, which primarily focuses on rhythmic breathing, helped treat their symptoms of depression.
