Know how harmful low blood pressure is and how to take care of it

Low blood pressure or hypotension can really get concerning if you don't tackle it at the right time. Low blood pressure can basically be described as blood pressure that is so low that the flow of blood to your body organs is inadequate and you might feel the symptoms such as dizziness, light-headedness and even fainting, shallow breathing, tiredness, chest pain, nausea and increased thirst. The causes of it is reduced blood volume, heart disease and medication. It will shock you to know that improper blood flow to your organs can result in heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure.

It is very important to follow some tips like having an adequate amount of salt, drink lots of fluids and take medication as prescribed by the doctor.

Here's how you manage low blood pressure:

- Eat adequate amount of salt: Sodium content in salt can actually help you raise the blood pressure. So, just make sure you consult the doctor about the foods you can include and exclude from your diet and amount the right amount of salt intake as well.

- Say goodbye to alcohol: It can lead to dehydration and in turn cause low blood pressure among many other issues.

- Opt for a well-balanced diet: Did you know that having low levels of vitamin B-12, iron and folic acid can invite anemia. It can occur when the body cannot make enough blood. Not just this, but anemia can also lead to low blood pressure. It is very important for you to eat fruits and veggies. You need to limit your carb intake and eat smaller portions of meals in order to prevent that sudden drop in blood pressure.

- Drink lots of water: If you aren't drinking much water, it will harm your body. Dehydration can actually lead to low blood pressure. So, you need to up your fluid game right away. Recommendation is to drink at least 3 litres of water every day if you don't have a weak heart or kidney disease.

- Get moving: Do light exercises which don't strain your body and enhance the blood circulation. Walk or practice yoga as it can be helpful.

- Manage you medication: Don't self-medicate as it can be risky. Patients that suffer from heart diseases and hypertension might need to alter their medication if their blood pressure remains low. A few heart medications can also cause low blood pressure. If you are someone who suffers from a heart disease, especially with a weak heart, consult your doctor immediately as he might consider reducing the water pills or blood pressure medications.
