Madhya Pradesh: Three girls slapped by fellow students for failing to do their homework

In Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh, three girls were slapped by their fellow students as part of punishment given by their science teacher, for failing to do their homework. This incident took place at Jawahar Navodaya Residential School in Thandla tehsil. The class 6th student’s father lodged a complaint, stating that her daughter was slapped by 14 students for nearly six days. The 12-year-old girl was slapped 168 times by her fellow classmates.


The principal of the school said in the teacher’s defense that it was a friendly punishment and the slaps were mild and strong. The father who lodged a complaint also said that they slapping has led to mental and physical trauma to her daughter.


Shivpratap Singh said in his complaint, "Teacher Manoj Kumar Verma ordered each of the students to give two slaps to Anushka every day for six days from January 11.”


Sher Singh Baghel Thandla police station in-charge said, "The victim was sent for a medical examination. No injuries were reported.”


He also said, "We had received a complaint. No injury was found during the medical examination of the girl. Our team also visited the school and found that such an incident had occurred. We are investigating further. However, no formal case has been registered so far.”


School principal K Sagar said in the teacher’s defense, "The fellow students did not hit the children hard... it was a friendly punishment aimed at sending the message across. We don't allow corporal punishment in the school. The girl is weak in studies and doesn't complete her assignments.”
