A new study states that a Mediterranean diet might help keep your vision intact by preventing some of the biggest causes of blindness. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an increasingly prevalent eye disease which is occurring due to poor diet and lifestyle. "You are what you eat," said Dr Emily Chew, spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

"Chronic diseases, such as AMD, dementia, obesity and diabetes, all have roots in poor dietary habits. It's time to take quitting a poor diet as seriously as quitting smoking," Chew said in an academy news release. The researchers conducted the study on nearly 5000 people aged 55 years and above. They found that people who followed a good Mediterranean diet were 41% less likely to develop AMD as compared to people who didn't follow the diet.

If you're wondering what kind of food comes under the Mediterranean diet, it features vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, olive oil and fish over meat. On their own, neither of these foods have the capability of reducing AMD, but as a whole, they can effectively combat the disease. Well, it looks like you need to start this diet immediately.
