Nutrition plays a bigger role in bone health than exercise does, study states

A study published in the journal PLOS One states that nutrition has a bigger effect on bone mass than exercise does. The study was conducted on mice where they found that even after the exercise had stopped, the mice retained bone strength gains because they were on a mineral-supplemented diet. The researchers figured that through a mineral-supplemented diet, one could not just increase bone mass and strength but also maintain those increases even after detraining. Plus, the diet alone was sufficient enough to increase bone mass without the aid of exercise.

Most studies focus on increasing calcium in diets but this one focused on increasing both calcium and phosphorous. They found that this had an even bigger advantage. But obviously, this doesn't mean one should run out and buy calcium and phosphorous supplements. One should rather focus on eating the adequate diet. The researchers suggested opting for sufficient calories and adequate protein, fat and carbohydrates, as well as, minerals and vitamins- particularly vitamin D and the mineral calcium. So, eat healthy to stay healthy - that's what we say.
