Patients with substance abuse issues can greatly benefit from psychology exercises, according to a new study.

Researchers say self-administered exercises help boost happiness (briefly) for people who are struggling with this kind of disorder.

For the study, researchers investigated whether positive psychology exercises could benefit people recovering from substance use by increasing happiness. The study's results revealed it is possible.

Researchers conducted an online survey, in which 500 adults reported they had or are currently struggling with a substance abuse disorder. Participants were given five short exercises that were text-based. It took approximately four minutes to complete. Soon after completing the exercise called 'Reliving Happy Moments,' participants reported the biggest increase in happiness.

Researchers believe these exercises can help bolster happiness during treatment and may even help support long-term recovery.

"Addiction scientists are increasingly moving beyond the traditional focus on reducing or eliminating substance use by advocating treatment protocols that encompass quality of life. Yet orchestrated positive experiences are rarely incorporated into treatment for those with substance use disorders," Bettina B Hoeppner, lead author of the study.

The team states their findings indicate the importance of how valuable positive experiences can be to tackle the challenges of recovery.Over the years, positive psychology treatment methods have been expanding across the globe.
