Residents of Oshiwara lead a rally to protest against drug peddling

Mumbai is touted to be one of the safest cities in India but to everybody's shock, it was recently discovered that the streets of Andheri-Lokhandwala and Oshiwara have been overrun by drug peddlers targeting children as young as 13. Due to this, pressure began mounting on the police on Saturday to launch a comprehensive clean-up operation. Many residents from the areas came together to form and lead a rally to protest against drug peddlers.
While residents of around 75 housing societies from the neighbourhood stayed firm on their decision to lead a rally to the Oshiwara police station on Sunday despite the denial of permission by the cops, top politicians from nearly every party tweeted their concern about the situation and demanded that cops end the menace at the earliest.
The residents, who had last Sunday lodged a complaint with the Oshiwara police and submitted videos and photographs of peddlers in action, further cranked up the pressure by releasing a testimonial video of a 19-year-old boy from Oshiwara who began taking meth when he was in class 9. The boy in the video not only pleads with youngsters to stay away from drugs, he reveals how easy it is to get access to meth in the area and urges cops to go after the peddlers and suppliers.

Though cops increased patrolling in the neighbourhood on Saturday, residents said it was too less and too late. "We demand nothing less than a war against the peddlers, suppliers and dealers. Though cops are putting pressure on us to call off Sunday's protest rally, we are firm on our decision. It will be a peaceful protest," said a resident. Another resident said, "It is really a serious issue. I am not saying that cops are not working, but they only act when they receive a complaint. Residents have alleged that there is very little routine patrolling."
