Sleep disorders: Women who snore are at a higher risk of cardiac problems, study states

Women who snore and suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) are at a greater risk of developing cardiac related health issues, a recent study has stated. In fact, women face an even greater risk than men do. Women who snore frequently might just be suffering from OSA in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. While there are other symptoms of OSA like gasping for air while sleeping, getting headaches, feeling irritable etc, snoring is amongst the most common symptoms.

OSA can cause serious damage to the valves in women's hearts. This, of course, can lead to cardiac risks. "We found that the cardiac parameters in women appear to be more easily affected by the disease and that women who snore or have OSA might be at greater risk for cardiac involvement,” said lead author Adrian Curta. The researchers studied 4,877 patients who had received a cardiac MRI. Their research showed that most of these women showed early signs of cardiac impairment. Apart from this, OSA was also found vastly underdiagnosed in most women who snored.

The researchers suggested that women who snore frequently should get themselves screened for OSA and that those with the condition should get it properly treated and in time. The treatment may also vary from person to person, for example, some people might benefit from losing weight. Stay tuned for more updates.
