Small plates won't aid in less consumption of food, says a new study

We've all come across articles which state that you can trick your brain into eating less by cutting up portions of your food to make there seem more than there is or by putting food into a smaller plate. While many people believed these statements, latest research has proved that the small plate trick doesn't really work. Head of the Laboratory for Visual Perception, Dr. Tzvi Ganel, said, "Plate size doesn't matter as much as we think it does. Even if you're hungry and haven't eaten, or are trying to cut back on portions, a serving looks similar whether it fills a smaller plate or is surrounded by empty space on a larger one."

In the study, they found that people who were food deprived for 3 hours or more were more likely to identify the proportions of pizza slice placed on smaller and larger plates as compared to people who had eaten recently. "When people are hungry, especially when dieting, they are less likely to be fooled by the plate size, more likely to realize they are eating less and more prone to overeating later," added Dr. Ganel. Well, looks like there's no tricking your brain about this one.
