A lot of people who smoke don't quit the nasty habit because they end up gaining weight. While it may seem that getting rid of one problem leads the way for another, a new study in the US has found that you're still better off in the long run when you quit smoking. Quitters who gained weight after they stopped smoking were still at a 50% lower risk of dying prematurely from heart disease and other problems.

Dr. William Dietz, a public health expert at George Washington University said that there are no permanent health-related consequences after one quits smoking. “The paper makes pretty clear that your health improves, even if you gain weight,” said Dietz. “I don’t think we knew that with the assurance that this paper provides,” he said. It turns out that quitting smoking can also prove to be really beneficial to diabetics.

Dr. Qi Sun said that people who quit smoking had an elevated risk of developing diabetes. However, "that risk doesn’t endure, and it never leads to a higher premature death rate than what smokers face", he said. “Regardless of the amount of weight gain, quitters always have a lower risk of dying” prematurely", Sun said.
