Did you know that insomnia is one common symptom of menopause? Nearly 20% of postmenopausal women report sleep disturbances and now, a Korean study conducted recently, states that sleep quality is often worse for women who undergo surgical menopause as compared to those who transition into menopause naturally. The study results are published online in Menopause, the journal of The North American Menopause Society (NAMS).

Surgical menopause is often accompanied by more psychological and physical difficulties. Some of the severe symptoms of menopause include hot flashes and night sweats that can disrupt a woman’s sleep and this study is one of the first to compare sleep-interfering behaviours based on the type of menopause, surgical and natural.

After conducting the study, the women who surgically transitioned into menopause reported significantly worse sleep quality in addition to being twice more likely to develop insomnia than those who naturally transitioned into menopause. "Early surgical menopause is known to be associated with more severe menopause symptoms," said Dr JoAnn Pinkerton, NAMS executive director. "That's why it is important to assess sleep quality in women after surgery that leads to menopause because insomnia and disrupted sleep can cause fatigue, mood changes, and lower quality of life," Pinkerton added.
