Taking on too much stress can lead to OCD, study states

In today's world, there's no doubting the fact that people are a lot more prone to stress in their everyday life as compared to earlier generations. There's plenty of responsibility on people's shoulders, and while it's a known fact that taking too much stress can prove to be rather bad for health, a study has now found that people who report intense feelings of responsibility tend to develop OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) or GAD (Generalised Anxiety Disorder).

People often tend to check things repeatedly like making sure the light switch is off or whether or not they've switched off the gas. And while many people do this, what makes the difference between a character trait and a disorder is the intensity and frequency with which they display these behaviours. "People with OCD (are) tortured by repeatedly occurring negative thinking and they take some strategy to prevent it... GAD is a very pervasive type of anxiety. Patients worry about everything," said the co-author of the study.

The researchers then tried to figure out a common cause for these disorders and what exactly were the theories behind them. They then combined tests used to study OCD and GAD and tried to see what went wrong where for people. There were previously no such studies done that compared the studies between OCD and GAD.

The researchers surveyed a bunch of American university students who were asked to report their levels of responsibility. It was found that those who reported higher responsibility were more likely to display behaviour that showed traits of OCD and GAD. The study also showed that personal responsibility, taking additional blame and the responsibility to think too much added to the links that caused OCD and GAD. Well, this goes to prove just how much of a negative impact stress can have on our brains. Stay tuned for more updates.
