Whether you’re vegetarian, vegan or simply omnivorous likes us, mushroom is a delight to all. These are succulent and adds a nice texture to the overall dish. Not only that, all types of edible mushrooms contains a varying percentage of protein and fibre. It is rich in Vitamin B as well as contains antioxidants. It can improve immunity levels of the body and prevent damage to cells and tissues. What’s not to like about them right? While you can easily find a variety of mushroom in your local departmental store or local bazaar, one problem about mushrooms has been its storage.

Mushroom tends to last for only a few days. It is highly perishable in nature. Once bought, you can see mushroom starts deteriorating within a day. This occurs due to their high respiration rate and delicate epidermal structure. Based on mushroom type, colour and texture, you can store fresh mushroom up to many days if you follow the instructions below:

Not going to cook your mushroom right away? It is best to leave them as it is, in its original packaging. The packaging must have a cardboard base to soak up its moisture and plastic wrap on top with holes to allow drying of excessive water. Keep it in the fridge for 3 days.

Another method includes storing mushroom in a paper bag with holes to draw out moisture. You can keep it in the refrigerator for up to 7-10 days. You may put tissues papers in the bag to soak up the excess water, and change them in every alternate day.

The last method is to freeze the mushrooms. Begin with thoroughly washing the mushrooms and cut them into desired sizes, sauté them with oil and seasoning. Once cooled, store them in a plastic zip bag and put it in your freezer.
