It is saddening to know but 15 in 1000 women and one in 1000 men suffer from thyroid. The entire body suffers when thyroid possesses a problem. The thyroid gland is responsible for the metabolic function of the body. A person who has thyroid suffers from weight gain, low body temperature, depression, hair fall, lack of stamina and poor light sensitivity. Hence, it is very important to get it treated and above all, it is very necessary to follow the do's and don'ts of the same.

Do's:

- Always have your thyroid levels checked on a regular basis. It doesn't matter if you do it via a lab test or at home, but keeping it in check is important. There are times when the doctor is only depended on the blood test for diagnosis and overlooks thyroid dysfunction. Since this happens, a lot o people are left undiagnosed. Hence it is recommended for thyroid patients to have a very transparent discussion with the doctor to seek some clarity.

- Consuming a lot of water is very important for thyroid patients, especially distilled water. This water cleanses the liver and kidneys of toxins as it is iodine free which helps the thyroid to function properly.

Don'ts:

- Thyroid patients are asked to avoid smoking and drinking immediately. It is because the alcohol suppresses the thyroid gland functions. Smoking or tobacco is as harmful as alcohol is as it blocks the iodide ration and synthesis of hormones.

- Staying away from macronutrients like fats, protein and carbohydrates is very necessary. Since they play an important role in regulation of thyroid. But, following a low-carb diet can adversely affect the thyroid. Diets that are far free and trans-fat can posses problems for thyroid patients.

- Coffee and sugar are equally harmful for thyroid patients as both stresses the body. Although, consuming caffeine in smaller quantities can help reduce inflammation which ultimately helps open up the blood vessels.

- Refering to the Internet in order to figure out what's wrong in you body isn't a safe option. Because you might get carried away and relate to everything that the Internet says about thyroid problems. But not all of them might actually relate to you. And so it is always advised to visit the doctor instead.
