Does your scalp itch and flake? You might consult a doctor and he might tell you it's just dandruff and suggest you to use some specific shampoo to get rid of it. But it could also be a rather serious problem like psoriasis which is a disease that causes scaly patches, redness on your skin. Although, once you have the right diagnosis, you can very much treat the cause and get some relieve.

Several things that cause dandruff:
- Contact dermatitis: Shampoos, gel or dye can irritate your scalp and cause itchiness, flaking and redness.
- Male hormones: Men are even more likely to get dandruff only because of their hormones.
- If you don't oil your hair enough, it could lead to oily skin which can start flaking off.
- People whose immune system is weak or people who have HIV can also be more likely to get dandruff.

Scalp Psoriasis on the other hand, can affect your scalp, cause redness, scaly patches which can flake off just like dandruff. However, there are a few differences:
- It may spread: Psoriasis patches can literally start creeping past your hairline to your forehead, the skin around your ears and even the back of your neck. You can also have psoriasis patches on other parts of your body like legs, feet, palms, elbows or back.
- It's chronic: This one is a rather long-lasting disease.
- It's more scaly and less flaky: Psoriasis looks like silvery, powdery, scaly patches which comes off in tiny pieces. More serious outbreaks of the same can the turn red and painful.
- It's an autoimmune disease: This is caused by your body's immune system. The white blood cells that should be fighting off the diseases attach your skin cells instead.
