Ageing is quite an irreversible, progressive and inevitable process. It brings along several changes to the body and its functions that can affect most of your organs.

This is when you should know that nutrition plays a vital role in healthy ageing. And this is also suggested by Dr Aastha, Head Clinical Nutrition, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali who says, “People face several health issues due to age and lack of adequate nutrition can add to the severity of the situation. Therefore, proper nutrient intake is essential for people. As nutrient requirement of people changes with age, one must know what to eat and what not to, based on the condition of their body.”

There are a few factors that can lead to reduced food intake after a person hits 50 - decreased sense of taste or smell, difficulty in chewing or swallowing, loss of appetite, loss of physical strength or mobility, chronic conditions and medication amongst many more.

In order to choose healthy ageing for yourself, you must:

- Limit sugars, sweet beverages, undiluted juices and instead, prefer fruits.

- Add lots of fluids to your diet as they can keep you hydrated and even help in digestion.

- Adopt easy-to-digest, small frequent meals.

- Replace the refined cereals and grains with some pulses and while grain cereals.

- Limit sedentary lifestyle and be more physically active.

- The fibre composition in your diet should be moderate.

- You need to add onion, garlic, lemon, cumin seeds, ginger, almonds, walnuts, coconut water, etc. in your diet. These foods will better your muscular flexibility and prevent water retention, swelling and even help in contributing healthy blood pressure.
