Don’t you hate when you bulk buy your vegetables and they start turning sad in a few days? Does one of them include ginger? If you just nodded yes to the never-ending kitchen problem then chances are you are not storing your stock of ginger properly.

Ginger is an important part of cooking. It adds a sharp flavor and aroma to any added dish and comes packed with loads of health benefits. It is known for its medicinal properties as well. Having a stock of ginger at home is always going to be handy. However, just like other perishable vegetables, ginger too tends to get stale and develop molds. But, with the right technique, you can make them last longer.

Start with picking the freshest ginger from the grocery store. By this, we mean, smooth skin and sturdy exterior. Ginger can be old and young depending on its age, but should never be soft and wrinkly.

Once bought, you can choose to store it in a paper bag to keep it in the refrigerator. Make sure there’s no air or moisture. You can also store it in the freezer. For using such frozen ginger, you don’t require to thaw it. One can simply take it out as it is and grate them over your dish.

Another way to store ginger is to preserve them with an acidic liquid. Begin with peeling the ginger and submerge them in a brine made out of spices and vinegar or lemon juice. Store it in a glass jar and it will last you for weeks.

You can also form a paste of ginger and store it in an airtight container. If placed in a freezer, you can enjoy it for a couple of month without losing its flavour.
