This magical vegetable that is abundantly found in all parts of the country is quite popular around the world. Mostly eaten raw due to its delicious sweet taste, it’s cooked and pickled too. However, in recent times, its health benefits have got more attention than its taste and flavour. Here’s how it can help you stay healthy and fit.

It keeps blood pressure under control
According to a research conducted by Lt Coles and PM Clifton from Nutritional Interventions Laboratory, Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute, Melbourne, Australia, a glass of beetroot juice can lower systolic blood pressure by an average of four to five points. Beetroot is rich in nitrates that convert into nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide helps the blood vessels relax and dilate and, in the process, improves blood flow and circulation.

Boosts stamina
Beetroot juice is one of the best pre-workout drinks as it instantly gives an energy boost. Researchers at the University of Health and Sports Sciences, Exeter, UK, found that those who drank a glass of beetroot juice prior to their workout could exercise for up to 16 percent longer. This happens as the nitric oxide created in your body steps up oxygen production and enhances tolerance for high-intensity exercises.

Protects you from environmental pollution
Beets are rich in betaine, a nutrient that helps protect cells, enzymes, and tissues from environmental damage. It also helps fight inflammation, protect internal organs, improves cardiovascular health and prevents other chronic diseases.

Wards off cancer
The phytonutrients that give beetroot its deep colour are effective against cancer. Research has proved that beetroot extract mixed with water helps reduce a multi-organ tumour in animals.

Fortifies immunity
Beetroots are a rich source of Vitamin C that is known to improve the body’s immunity against diseases. It is also high in fibre that keeps you full for longer and curbs cravings. The potassium found in beets is essential for proper functioning of the nervous system and muscle groups. Beets also contain manganese that’s good for your bones, liver, kidney, and pancreas.
