When we think about diabetes, we naturally presume that it means to have very high blood sugar levels. Type 2 diabetes is one of the most dangerous medical conditions one can suffer from and if left untreated for long it could cause heart disease and even stroke. But sometimes blood sugar levels can drop to extremely low levels which is also pretty hazardous for the body.

Hypoglycaemia, also known as low blood sugar is what occurs when blood glucose levels fall below 4 mmol/L (72mg/dL). Low blood sugar levels often occur when a person fails to create a balance between the food and drinks they consume as well as the physical activity they opt for and the diabetes medication they take (insulin).

“The brain requires a continuous supply of glucose from the blood in order to function, and if glucose levels drop (as in hypoglycaemia) the brain is one of the first organs affected.” This is also why people with hypoglycaemia can suffer from headaches or migraines which happen to be one of the most common symptoms of low blood sugar levels in the body. Other symptoms include confusion, nausea, sweating, faintness, and hypothermia and in severe cases, it may also lead to a coma or death.

There are a number of factors that can affect blood pressure and those include skipping meals, rigorous dieting, eating too many high-sugar foods and fasting. Even delayed or irregular meals can cause blood sugar levels to rise or fall. “Headaches produced from going without food are often quite severe and accompanied by mild nausea."

“There is also a similarity between some of the symptoms of missing a meal and the early warning signs (premonitory) of a migraine attack, such as: yawning, pallor, sweating, headache, a craving for sweet things, and mood changes.” The researchers suggested that it's best to opt for healthier foods like veggies and fruits which have natural sugars in them and they also explained that it was important to cut down on sugary foods like cakes and biscuits.

“The naturally-occurring sugars in unrefined food are digested much more slowly than those in refined food, which means that glucose is released into the bloodstream more slowly, and so is less likely to stimulate the over-production of insulin that leads to hypoglycaemia.” They also added that if you're on a diet it would be best to opt for one which helps you lose weight over a long period of time as this wouldn't take too much of a toll on your body. Plus, it will also help keep the weight off.
