This new test can accurately detect the cause of your back pain, study reveals

Most doctors recommend getting an MRI or an X-ray done when patients go to them with back pain issues. While these methods may work if there are structural issues in the spine, most other causes of back pain can go undetected in MRIs and X-rays. More often than not, backaches are caused due to mechanical issues such as weak musculature. And while getting an MRI might not help, some good news here is that researchers from Germany have developed an accurate spine function test which is being used by physicians worldwide.

“New technological advances in back pain diagnosis has helped us jointly build a path to non-surgical treatment of back and neck pain. This can help us approach the problem with a more holistic view. This is certainly changing the face of back pain treatment in India,” shared Dr Gautam Shetty, a senior orthopaedic surgeon from Mumbai.

Another doctor spoke about MRIs and X-rays and said that while these tests study a patient's back when they're in a static position, most pain occurs only when the patient is doing some activity like walking or bending. This is why researchers have come up with spine function tests to help accurately identify which part of the musculature has a defect and what exercises can be recommended to combat the pain. In fact, the test is so good that it has even prevented people from getting unnecessary surgeries.

“The most common form of back pain comes from mechanical wear and tear of the support tissues of the spine. A spine function test can individualise your problem and help develop a need-based rehabilitation programme. This seems to be the future of back pain cure,” concluded a doctor. Stay tuned for more updates.
