Vertigo or dizziness is a common health problem faced by people over the age of 60, making it difficult for them to balance their bodies and carry out normal activities like walking or grasping a thing. This health issue can also lead to a smell of fainting. If the condition worsens it can make the simplest daily tasks difficult.
Physiotherapy might not be the most sought after type of treatment for this. But according to new studies, certain exercises and treatments can help treat the problems related to balance and dizziness. The branch of physiotherapy which deals with this is known as Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT).

Physiotherapy helps treat vertigo or balance related issues by healing the vestibular parts in the body- which comprise of your sensory organs (like the ears and the eyes) and stabilizes the faulty nerve connections in the brain, which control your sense of balance. By rehabilitating or retraining the vestibular organs in the body, this healing methodology promotes balance and alignment.

Physiotherapy exercises meant for treating vertigos work towards cutting down the duration of the fainting and dizziness spells, which one can experience with overexposure to visual stimuli. One way to do this is by inducing light strength dizzy spells to the trigger and make it immune to the stimulus and effectively help build the tolerance levels.

Just like other forms of physiotherapy, one needs to attend multiple sessions and practice it regularly to see results. VRT exercises, as compared to other physiotherapy exercises are a little more straining and difficult but with commitment, it gets easier.
