Researchers say a traditional Chinese tea known as oolong tea can significantly reduce high blood pressure - a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Many studies have found those who drink this tea regularly can help reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Managing these levels can also help people reduce their risk of heart disease. One study found drinking approximately 120ml of oolong tea daily helped reduce blood pressure levels by close to 46 per cent in participants.

Regularly consuming this drink has also been found to improve and maintain good heart health. A study conducted on close to 76,000 Japanese participants found those who consumed almost 240ml of this tea has a reduced risk of heart disease by almost 61 per cent.

However, it is important to note that oolong tea does contain caffeine, which has been found to increase blood pressure levels. Nevertheless, the amount of caffeine is relatively small compared to the caffeine found in coffee. So it may not have a huge impact on one developing high blood pressure. “Drinking more than four cups of coffee a day may increase your blood pressure," according to the NHS (UK).

The NHSfurther stated: “If you’re a big fan of coffee, tea or other caffeine-rich drinks, such as cola and some energy drinks, consider cutting down. Adding, “It’s fine to drink tea and coffee as part of a balanced diet, but it’s important that these drinks are not your main or only source of fluid.”

While certain foods and diets can help reduce high blood pressure, it is important to incorporate certain teas that can also be beneficial. Experts also urge people to exercise regularly. You should aim to do at least 150 minutes of moderate exercises per week. Gardening and walking can also be extremely beneficial to improve your health.

High blood pressure is becoming a growing issue across the globe and can lead to life-threatening health complications. Make sure to get a reading regularly or ask a doctor to check your blood pressure. If the condition is left untreated, it could increase your chances of experiencing a heart attack and stroke. Lifestyle changes and a healthy diet can significantly reduce your risk of high blood pressure.
