Summer is here! That means hot, sweltering days are going to be around for a while. While this weather can be a whole lot of fun, it can also cause health issues like infections, heat stroke and sunburn. With a healthy lifestyle, you can take care of your physical and mental health this season.

Here are a few ways to stay healthy all summer long:

1. Stay hydrated: The heat is no joke. You need to make sure you stay hydrated throughout the day in order to function well. Ideally, you should consume at least eight glasses of water a day. You could even make things interesting by adding berries, mint leaves or lime slices to your water. Coconut water and lemon juice are also beverages you can consume this summer. Another way to make sure you don't get dehydrated is by eating snacks that have high water content like cucumbers, watermelon and tomatoes.

2. Have a good breakfast: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for a reason. You may have a hectic morning and are in a rush to get places. Stop! Take some time to sit down and enjoy your morning meal before you start your day. Without it, you won't have sufficient nutrition to stand the heat. Consume a breakfast that is high in protein, fruits and whole grain. This will help to give your metabolism a boost.

3. Rest well: You should aim to get at least seven to nine hours of sleep every night. Make sure your bedroom is cool and has enough shade to make it comfortable to sleep in.

4. Exercise:Regular exercise early in the morning or in the evening when it's cool and not too hot will keep your body in shape, as well as boost your energy. Go for a brisk walk, running or biking. At work, walk up and down the stairs during your break.

5. Consume healthy foods: Make sure you follow a strict diet that will help keep you in form all summer long. Plan your meals and make sure you are getting enough nutrition. Take advantage of seasonal foods. Ensure you also consume loads of fresh fruit and vegetable every day.

6. Enjoy health barbeques: Part of the summer fun is gathering with friends and family to enjoy a good old fashion barbeque. Opt for healthy foods instead of fattening meat. Grill fresh fish or chicken. Experiment with a variety of vegetables you can grill too.

7. Limit alcohol intake: heat and alcohol are not a good mix. So take it easy and limit the number of drinks you consume as it can make you feel dehydrated. Opt for delicious fruit smoothies or mocktails instead.

8. Apply sunscreen: Not matter how long you plan on spending time in the sun, you need to apply sunscreen. Make sure it is at least SPF 30. This will protect you from the harmful UV rays and protect your skin. Apply the lotion all over your body. Ultraviolet exposure reportedly increases 10 per cent for every 1,000 feet above sea level. So even if you are going on a short walk you need to protect your skin. You also need to protect your eyes from these harmful rays, so invest in good sunglasses.

9. Connect with people: Be sure to socialise. Stay connected with other people. Plan events with family and friends. You could enjoy each other's company at a fair or just at home over lunch. Staying engaged will help you have a more positive attitude and keep negative thoughts at bay.
