A healthy, balanced diet does so much more than just nourish your body. It provides you with energy and gives it the essential nutrients. The proverbial saying, “You are what you eat” did not come with no thought, it carried deep significance. A recent study of eating habits also goes on to prove that one’s food choices are very important. The study says that having an unhealthy or low-nutrient value diet can be more hazardous than smoking cigarettes. For the study, the research team observed an assessed consumption of food and nutrients across 195 countries among people of over the age of 25.
The study was published in the medical journal, The Lancet.
For the study, the team thoroughly observed the link between suboptimal diet and rate of mortality. The research team involved over 130 scientists from around 40 countries took part in the study. The study’s result will definitely make you switch to a healthier diet immediately.
The study said that the reason for deaths of over 10.9 million people could be contributed to pool diet plans. In contrast, smoking was responsible for 8 million deaths that year. It also added that a lesser intake of healthy food was the reason for 50 percent of the diet-related deaths.
The research further pointed out three specific eating habits – low intake of fruits, low intake of whole grain and high consumption of sodium. These three eating habits have a harsh impact on people’s health.
According to the study, food items that are linked to high death rates are red meat, processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages, and trans fatty acids among other foods.
