Ways in which you can help your child deal with emotional issues

We're all prone to having emotional issues from time to time. More often than not we have trouble deciphering what we want and this is usually because we're taught as children to not pay too much attention to our emotions. This can make things rather difficult for children who have trouble dealing with their emotions and this, in turn, can cause issues even as they turn into adults.

It becomes important for adults to ensure that their children don't start being in denial about how they feel and instead opt for coping mechanisms that will help them deal with their emotions. Sometimes children have a hard time due to certain trauma they might have faced. The National Institute of Mental Health (USA) defines childhood trauma as, "The experience of an event by a child that is emotionally painful or distressful, which often results in lasting mental and physical effects." That's why it's all the more important to tell your children that there are ways in which they can deal with this.

- Ask them to practise mindfulness: If you teach them from a young age to figure out what they're feeling, they're more likely to be able to control their emotions. This means there are fewer chances of them having emotional outbursts or feeling uncomfortable all the time. It'll help them move past denial of their feelings.

- Meditation can help: If adults can do this, so can kids. Meditation works wonders for everyone. And it might work rather well for children who often feel restless and impatient. It'll teach them to let go of things and focus on themselves and their emotion at that point.

- Yoga: If your kids are more interested in moving around than sitting in one place you can always opt for some kids yoga for them. Since kids are super flexible, it can help them opt for various different poses which will not only get rid of rigidity from their bodies but their minds as well.
