Experts say Lyme disease is on the rise as the tick population grows. This has caused many, including pregnant women, to worry about getting bitten.

"Ticks have been biting humans since there were humans, and because of that, our immune systems are very familiar with the microbes they carry. If your immune system is healthy, it will protect you against most microbes that ticks transmit," William Rawls, an OB/GYN and Lyme disease expert, told a news portal.

A 2018 study revealed even though transmission of the disease could occur through the placenta can occur, the risk is still low. The risk was lower for mothers who were healthy, as well as received antibiotics for acute symptoms of Lyme disease. However, prevention is better than cure.

Here are a few simple ways pregnant women can protect themselves and their babies against the disease.

1. Provide your body with nourishment: That means avoiding unprocessed foods at all cost. A diet that includes healthy foods can help give the immune system a boost. Consume loads of vegetables and healthy fats. Remember, too much refined food and carbohydrates can cause insulin resistance, which can have an impact on the immune system.

2. Keep your environment clean: Pesticides, herbicides, plastics, and more are toxins you need to stay clear of in order to keep the immune system healthy. Choose organic foods and make sure you drink filter water. You should also be mindful of the beauty products you are using and opt for nontoxic products.

3. Keep calm: Stress and tension can cause the body to be on high alert. This is not very good for the immune system. Combat these issues by trying yoga or meditate. Even taking a walk can help tackle this issue.

4. Move your body: You probably already know that a sedentary lifestyle is unhealthy and can be stressful to the body. It could even cause the immune system to function improperly. Make sure to move your body throughout the day.

5. Keep your microbiome in check: An unhealthy diet, stress and toxins can reduce the diversity of the microbiome. This is no good for the immune system. You could add herbs that support the immune system in your diet. Chinese skullcap and rehmannia are some popular choices.

Consult with your doctor before making any changes to your diet and fitness routine.
