An expert warns India may soon become the 'world capital of coronary artery diseases' as the country already has the highest rate of patients with cardiovascular disease.

Dr HK Bali, a renowned cardiologist and chairman of Paras Superspecialty Hospital in Panchkula told a news portal close 45 million people are suffering from heart disease in India. He believes an unhealthy lifestyle, especially among young people, is the reason the heart disease has become a leading cause of death in the country. People as young as 25 are now being diagnosed with heart disease.

Taking care of your heart is especially crucial for women as research has found that death rates from heart failure are higher for women than men. "We found that mortality from heart failure remains high, especially in women; that hospital admissions for heart failure decreased in men but increased in women; and that women and men had differently associated comorbidities," the authors of the study told a news portal.

Here are the warning signs of heart disease to be on the lookout for:

Dyspnea
Fatigue
Pain or discomfort in the chest
Nausea
Heartburn or pain in the stomach
Pain inthe neck, jaw, back or arms

Preventative measures are the best way to reduce your risk of heart disease. Here are a few tips on how you can keep your heart healthy:

1: Consume foods good for the heart:Eat a lot of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans and legumes in order to keep your heart healthy. You should also include dairy products that are low in fat, as well as fish and poultry.

2: Avoid too much sugar and salt: Limit your intake of saturated fats and trans fats like red meat. As hard as it is, you should also try to limit your intake of baked goods like cookies and chips and other heavy snacks.

3. Exercise:It may sound trite to say, but moving your body on a regular basis will help to improve circulation and strengthen your heart. Physical activities can also help reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. 30 minutes of exercise on a daily basis can be very beneficial to improve heart health.

4. Quit smoking: Chemicals found in tobacco have been found to cause damage to the blood vessels and the heart. It could also cause the arteries to become narrow, which could cause a buildup of plaque and result in a heart attack.

5. Reduce stress: It is crucial to limit stress and anxiety in your life as it has been found to significantly increase the risk of heart disease. Join a yoga class or meditate to improve your state of mind.

6. Get checked: Even if you have adopted a healthy lifestyle in order to improve or maintain your health, it is still important to get yourself checked. That way, you know where you stand when it comes to your risk of heart disease, blood pressure, cholesterol or even diabetes.
