Women are more likely to face criticism for hate speech as compared to men, states study

As if women were facing any less discrimination, now a new study states that they're more prone to criticism for their hate speeches as compared to men. That's right, if you're a woman on social media and you've ranted about something, chances are you will face a lot more criticism than a man would. In fact, even when women make counter-arguments they are judged more harshly as compared to men. Wilhelm and Joeckel, the lead researchers conducted a survey on Facebook to figure out the truth to this theory.



The participants were made to read through online comments directed against women and sexual minorities and were asked if they would flag these comments as inappropriate. While some comments were presented as being made by men, others were presented as being made by women. Wilhelm said, "These findings support the idea that women are more concerned about fairness and avoiding harm to others than men." Joeckel added that moderators of online discussions should also consider the role gender plays in the situation. Stay tuned for more updates.
