Depression and anxiety are still taboo subjects in our country. While India is amongst the top countries to have the highest rates of depression, people still don't take mental health as seriously as they should. And therapy is simply looked down upon. But if one can go to a doctor for a physical ailment then why can't they go to the doctor for a mental ailment? It's very important to be able to take care of your mental health appropriately and so, here are some myths about therapy that you must stop believing in to be able to take the next step towards your wellbeing.

Your friends can help just as much as a therapist - No, they can't. They haven't studied mental health for years nor do they have any experience dealing with similar situations. A therapist can help because they're qualified and they aren't personally involved in your experience so they can see the bigger picture and help you out accordingly.

You're not crazy so you don't need to see a therapist - This perception that people with mental health are crazy needs to change. You're not crazy, you never were, you're just unwell. And you need to seek help to get better. You need to understand that mental health is serious and no matter what anyone tells you, you must do everything to help make yourself better.

Talking things out won't help much anyway - Wrong! It does help. When you go through something and react to it in a certain way, sometimes you don't even know why you reacted the way you did. That's what a therapist can help you figure out. They can help you learn how to be aware of what you're feeling and what your reactions to your feelings mean.

You can't afford therapy because it is super expensive - While this might be true for some therapists, there are so many others out there who aren't as expensive. And don't you spend money on medicines you need for physical ailments? Then why think so much about the money you should spend on mental health?

The bottom line is that mental health is important and it needs to be taken seriously. So, if you need it, give therapy a try and see how it goes. Stay tuned for more updates.
