It's no secret that sitting for prolonged periods of time can cause health issues but a recent study claims it can even cause dangerous health risks. While the evidence against prolonged sitting without breaks keeps piling up, an effective solution to the problem is yet to be found. Now, people working in health care have been given the new task of informing patients about the health risks of prolonged sedentary time as well as making suggestions to reduce and interrupt sitting times.

"Nurses have a pivotal role to play in increasing public awareness about the potential adverse effects of high-volume and prolonged uninterrupted sitting," said study author and Dr. Linda Eanes. "Nurses can also actively encourage all patients, regardless of demographics, to balance sedentary behaviour and physical activity simply by taking more frequent standing or walking breaks," added Dr. Eanes.

The health risks from prolonged sitting include cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity and even certain cancers. Well, looks like it's time to start creating a balance in our lives so as to avoid sitting for long hours. Stay tuned for more updates.
