Drinking diet sodas will only make you put on those extra kilos

If you think drinking diet soda is not going to let you put on weight, I'm going to burst your bubble, my friend. New evidence suggests that opting for a low-calorie soda is going to make you consume extra calories.

Says the new study published in Pediatric Obesity that kids and teens who drank diet coke as well as other beverages also consumed an extra of 200 calories per day. This is in comparison to their peers who only drank water. Isn't it scary?

Kids who drank diet drinks consumed the same number of daily calories in comparison to those who consumed the sugar versions of such drinks like regular coke.

“These results challenge the utility of diet or low-calorie sweetened beverages when it comes to cutting calories and weight management. Our findings suggest that water should be recommended as the best choice for kids and teens,” said Dr. Allison Sylvetsky, who led the study at the George Washington University

Diet drinks do not lower calorie intake and this is proved by a survey that was conducted by Sylvetsky and her team where 7,026 kids and teenagers enrolled in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for the years 2011 to 2016.

Here, the kids and teens reported everything that they ate and drank in the 24 hours period. They noticed that kids who consumed diet drinks ended up taking 196 calories in one day. Those who drank sugar sodas consumed about 312 calories per day. And for those who consumed both diet and regular drinks were in for 450 calories in one single day. All of it in comparison to water drinkers.

Weight gain can be dangerous. Sylvetsky said that these findings are important as one in three kids in the U.S. is overweight or obese. This increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart issues or other health problems in them. She also said that the study gives a link between drinking sodas and eating more calories and sugar in a day. She's suggested that trying on some flavoured sparkling water with 100% fruit juice is a better alternative to soft drinks.
