Leukemia is a type of cancer that cripples the normal functioning of blood and bone marrow. The prime cause of leukemia can be the excessive growth of white blood cells in the blood. Although, white blood cells are known to fight off infections, bacteria, and other pathogens, an elevated growth of white blood cells can disrupt its correct functioning. This excessive amount of white blood cells can also affect other organs of the body and lower the overall immunity system.

Some of the common symptoms of leukemia can be excessive sweating, sudden weight loss, fatigue, weakness in the body, night sweats, seizures, breathing problems, headaches, pain in the bones, abnormal lymph nodes, red spots on the skin, fever chills and even swollen spleen. People suffering from this disease also are more likely to get bruised or bleed easily as they become vulnerable to infections.

Although, there are several kinds of leukemia and hence the treatment varies. The treatment can include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, gene therapy, stem cell transplantation, biological or immune therapy. All these can be effective if diagnosed as early as possible.
