Exercise during pregnancy could protect child from obesity: Study

Exercising while you are pregnant could protect your child from obesity, according to a new study conducted by a team from Washington State University. The new findings could have major implications for the obesity epidemic, which is on the rise across the globe.

Even though previous research has found obese females who workout can benefit their child, this is the first study to show the benefits are similar for non-obese women too. "Based on our findings, we recommend that women—whether or not they are obese or have diabetes—exercise regularly during pregnancy because it benefits their children's metabolic health," study author Jun Seok Son told a news portal.

Exercising during this time can also be beneficial for mothers. Physical activity can boost energy, reduce stress, and improve sleep quality.

Researchers also note pregnant women who are healthy and don't exercise may put their child at risk of obesity and metabolic issues. "Our data suggests that the lack of exercise in healthy women during pregnancy can predispose their children to obesity and associated metabolic diseases partially through impairing thermogenic function," Son told a news portal.

Another study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, found a lot of weight gain during the pre-pregnancy period may cause changes in breast milk, which may be harmful to the child. "The importance of this study is that it demonstrates that breast milk contents can vary depending on mother's weight status at the time of conception and further impact the growth and development of breastfeeding infants," study author Henry Nuss. Adding, "Infants who are born to mothers of unhealthy weight status may be metabolically programmed to have a less favourable growth response to breast milk.
