When it comes to India, we all know the bigger the wedding, the larger the party and the more colossal the waste. Need no second thought, weddings and banquets are one of the huge sources of current food waste, but resorts and eateries equally add up to the food wastage. In a situation where almost million tonnes of food goes into waste on a daily basis, we came across IBNII Spa and Resort, a luxury resort tucked in the Madikeri. It probably is the only resort so far to put some serious thoughts into the growing concern by making their guests pay for wasting food. Yes, you read it correctly. The more you waste, the more you pay. This is a rare step towards a better tomorrow.

This noble concept from the self-claimed eco-luxury stay is said to focus on the value of food. Earlier the Spa resort used to deal with 14 garbage bins filled with leftover or uneaten meals on an average day. To improve the situation, the resort tried regulating a fixed number of times for the guests to place their food orders. However, that brought only a little change to the amount of food waste. At last, the authorities of the resort came up with the solution by charging their customers for the food that they ordered but did not finish.

Behind this unique idea, a simple calculation goes on. During the checkout process of the guests, each one is informed about the amount of total food waste that has been done during their period of the staycation. A charge of INR 100 is levied per 10 grams of food waste. That’s not all. The fines collected from guests go directly to a drop-box which later gets donated to an NGO in Madikeri for feeding orphan kids.

This initiative has received loads of appreciation around the country and is working fine for the last 6 months. We applaud the initiative.
