A new study has found that if you have inflammation on some body part of yours and are unable to exercise, you could just as well opt for a hot water bath. Hot water can reportedly improve inflammation and blood sugar (glucose) levels. When a person undergoes physical stress, it can lead to inflammation which then activates the release of anti-inflammatory substances in the body.

A hot water immersion may, “improve aspects of the inflammatory profile and enhance glucose metabolism in sedentary, overweight males and might have implications for improving metabolic health in populations unable to meet the current physical activity recommendations”, said researchers including Christof Andreas Leicht from the Loughborough University in the UK.

For the research, the team studied several overweight men with sedentary lifestyles. These people were divided into two groups wherein one group was asked to immerse their bodies in hot water and the other group immersed their bodies in room temperature water. After two weeks it was found that people who took hot water baths had a reduction of fasting blood sugar and insulin levels. Their inflammation level also seemed to be a lot lower.
