Tea lovers rejoice! While you may enjoy your cup of the fresh brew because of its taste and ability to help make you feel refreshed, it looks like tea has a lot more health benefits to offer. And the star tea we're talking about here is green tea. Now that the festive season is finally over, you might want to reach for a snack or a drink that won't make you feel bloated and that's where green tea steps into the picture.

As per a new study, drinking green tea could not just boost metabolism and make you feel refreshed, it might also help you live longer. Research suggests that drinking around three cups of green tea per week could significantly improve and extend a person's lifespan. Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing conducted research on the health of 100,902 people who had no history of heart attack, stroke or cancer.

As per their research, tea drinkers who consumed tea habitually developed coronary heart disease and stroke 1.41 years later and lived 1.26 years longer as compared to non-habitual tea drinkers even post the age of 50. It was also found that habitual tea drinkers had a 22 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease or stroke and a 15 percent lower chance of dying from all other causes.

The researchers also managed to find that green tea drinkers had a 25 percent lower chance of developing heart diseases and conditions and had an even lower risk of dying from such conditions. Among all the participants, around 49% preferred drinking green tea while 8% of them chose black tea and the rest favoured different kinds of tea like scented tea.

"Habitual tea consumption is associated with lower risks of cardiovascular disease and all-cause death,” said first author Dr Xinyan Wang. "The favourable health effects are the most robust for green tea and for long-term habitual tea drinkers.” Since green tea is often consumed on its own, people are able to reap more benefits from it. Other teas like black tea are usually served with milk which can hinder the benefits the tea has to offer. Stay tuned for more updates.
