Is our sense of humour dying a slow death?

I too, like many of you, watched Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and felt a little disappointed the way it turned out. But, only a little. The film though had some inappropriate cuts, but those were made keeping in mind the current scenario of the nation. No issues made over the film shocked me like the one when people took offense over the Mohammed Rafi dialogue said by Anushka Sharma.
Like Anushka said in the film, “Mohd. Rafi gaate nahi rote the,” but isn’t that is how we speak about many other legendary singers within our friend circles during tea time discussions? We all have our favourites, and none can take away from the songs that Mohd. Rafi sang. But a dialogue that was supposedly to be taken with a pinch of salt is now taken completely out of context for which people are outraging over. I, with immense respect to the singer and his fans, would state that the dialogue made by Anushka was in a playful manner as she wasn’t taking a dig at the singer, but at Ranbir as she didn’t consider him a good singer (in the film).
What really takes away from the concerns of the legendary singer’s many fans is that though they thought the first comment was offensive, they blatantly ignored a dialogue where Anushka praises the singer. While we understand that the singer’s family feels outraged, we should also look at it from a perspective of humour, and not agitation. Many a times I all have said things people didn’t agree to, but never have I seen a crowd protest against the same. I may not be a celebrity to gauge that kind of attention, but seriously guys where is your sense of humour? Singers lamenting in protest, people burning down Karan Johar’s effigies, complaints being filed against the filmmaker… has this become the biggest issue of our lives? For many it may be an issue now, but tomorrow the news will fade like smoke and none will even remember.
