When it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, most people often think about eating the right kind of food and opting for a regular exercise routine. But what most people fail to remember is that the right amount of sleep is just as important as any other factor. In fact, it could be more important than others. Lack of sleep can lead to multiple issues like fatigue, mood swings, lethargicness and even loss of appetite.

A study has now found it has serves even more complications. Apparently, lack of sleep can lead to negative emotional bias. As per the study, when participants were shown pleasant and neutral pictures, they perceived it in a more negative way when their sleep was restricted several nights in a row. For the study, the participants were tested after they'd slept well for 5 days in a row and then again when they were not allowed to sleep well for 5 days in a row wherein they got only 5 hours of sleep per night.

“Insufficient sleep may impose a negative emotional bias, leading to an increased tendency to evaluate emotional stimuli as negative,” said lead author Daniela Tempesta, PhD, of the University of L’Aquila, in Italy.“Considering the pervasiveness of insufficient sleep in modern society, our results have potential implications for daily life, as well as in clinical settings,” she added. This goes to show that lack of sleep needs to start being recognised as a serious issue that plagues the general population. Stay tuned for more updates.
