Ladies, you can swim with or without tampons even during your periods

The period week has been stopping women to do a host of activities, but now swimming won’t be one of them. From the health perspective, periods shouldn’t be one of the reasons to stop you from enjoying the waters. According to Dr. Jacqueline Ho, MD reproductive endocrinology and infertility expert at Keck Medicine of USC, “It is safe to swim on your periods. It is not going to increase your risk of catching an infection.” Did you know swimming during periods helps to aid body aches and muscle cramps?

Science says, swimming while on periods with or without wearing any menstrual product is likely to stop your periods temporarily due to water pressure. Dr.Ho explains, “Blood typically flows out from the uterus into the vagina through the cervix because of gravity, and the water pressure can decrease the flow while swimming." However, it doesn’t completely stops the period flow from happening. Big movements, such as coughing, sneezing can override the action.

If you are someone who would still like to be on the safe side, tampons or menstrual cups might be the best options. It is perfectly safe to wear a tampon during taking a swim as it stays higher inside the vagina to absorb the flow. There’s no to little exchange of fluid between what’s inside the vagina and the outside water. On the other hand, menstrual cups sits in one place as a barrier between water and the blood.

Still, having second thoughts? Worrying about leaking your blood in the water is quite normal. But that shouldn’t be the case as any small amount of blood that gets into the water would either be neutralised by the chlorine in the pools or vastly diluted by natural water bodies where one might be taking a dip. Also, thanks to Hollywood movies, if you are concerned that swimming in your period might attract a shark, there’s no data to support it.

Although, it is best to avoid swimming during periods only if you just have had vaginal surgery, including miscarriage, baby delivery and so on. Also, make sure you change your menstrual product right after coming out of water. Apart from these, there should not be anything standing between you and the water, not even your periods!
