When it comes to prepping, it is always good to be over-prepared than being under. Be it a storm passing by your city or a rainy day, having a good supply of the basic that keeps us alive is important. These basics include food, water, medicine, and shelter. But, the biggest struggle for most people usually is the food. It begins with storing food products incorrectly and hence doesn’t last long. To ensure your food product retains its shelf-life one must know how to store products properly.

Storage of food products can differ from dry to wet. Dry food, such as dry fruits, pulses, beans tend to last longer than wet ingredients. To ensure your product doesn’t get spoil or funky, airtight storage boxes are ideal. For storing products like oil, pickle, tomatoes, pineapple and other acid-induced goods, one must avoid metal storage.

Before packing any food item, one must ensure each box is thoroughly washed and dried so that no bacteria can feed on moisture. This in return will keep your food products safe.

It is best to store your food products away from direct sunlight or heat. However, perishable products like butter, cheese, milk, vegetables sustain better when stored at a cool temperature. Products like bread, eggs, leafy vegetables, herbs, mushrooms survive better at the room temperature. It is best to check labels printed at the back of each food item to decide the ideal temperature required by each product.

Another popular method to make wet ingredients last long is to store them in the freezer. Similarly, you can freeze meat products and even vegetables up to 3 to 5 weeks in your freezer.

One must not consume any food product beyond its expiry date as it can lead to severe health conditions. There is no way to extend the expiry date of a food product.
