Liquor baron and industrialist Vijay Mallya was on the run post money laundering charges were imposed upon him in India. He was arrested today in the UK by Scotland Yard after India requested his extradition. He will make an appearance before the Westminster Magistrates' Court in London today.

As per the Extradition Treaty between India and the UK, Indian Government had requested a formal extradition for Mallya in February this year.

Vijay Mallya fled India last year after being continuously summoned for an ongoing bank case which stated that the liquor barren owed approximately Rs 9000 crore to a group of banks including the SBI.

A leading news agency states that Mallya's arrest has been made on an extradition request from the CBI. It was last month that India received a confirmation that the extradition request has been certified by the Secretary of State.

An open-ended non-bailable warrant was issued last week by a Delhi court against Vijay Mallya in a case of alleged violation of foreign exchange rules. Post which Centre cancelled Mallya's passport and asked the UK Government to deport him to India. However, since Mallya has a UK visa, the British officials said he could legally stay in London even without an Indian passport.

The CBI has filed a 1000-page charge sheet against Mallya in connection with the bank loans. This is considered to be CBI's big win as their attempts at getting Mallya to justice have been successful.
