Sweet potatoes are often regarded as the healthier brother or sister of the beloved potato. And people are not wrong. Sweet potatoes are packed with a bunch of unique health benefits, rich in vitamin A, C, and B6. They also aid in boosting the immunity and improve heart health by helping to regulate blood pressure. “In general, the more colour you can add into your diet coming from fruits and vegetables, the better,” says Yasi Ansari, a sports dietitian in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Despite being a starchy vegetable and its share of carb content, it has enough fiber content to make up for it. In fact, sweet potatoes’ high carb content help in keeping one full for a long time.

But even with all these benefits to boast about, it’s still not a good idea to consume copious amount of sweet potato fries. Why? Because all vegetables are usually healthy until they’re fried.

So how should one consume sweet potatoes, you ask?

Research has found that steaming, roasting, baking, and boiling doesn’t lose its nutrients in the process. So, that are few ways you can cook them. Apart from that, you can also let them cool and whip them into smoothies with soymilk, protein powder, and cinnamon; blend them into a soup, or bake them into chips and dip them in hummus. That being said, over-cooking a sweet potato can lose its nutrients.

Since sweet potatoes are rich in vitamin A (which are fat-soluble), they are best absorbed with a fat source. So the next time you’re having a serving of boiled sweet potato, drizzle over some olive oil over it!
