World Sleep Day: This is how much you should be sleeping according to your age

Ever spent an entire night laying awake while contemplating the complexity of your life? If you have been there, then you must know that sleep is a slippery beast. While some tend to fall asleep faster once they hit the sack, it can the opposite for a few unlucky ones! However, an exception lies in between these two categories when one might get their quality sleep and still wake up exhausted and tired. The mystery of how much sleep one person requires is still debatable, but on the occasion of World Sleep Day, we are going to take some expert help on this issue.

According to the Sleep Foundation, sleep is a vital indicator of health and sleep needs can vary from people to people. Age and lifestyle play an effective role in deciding how many hours between the sheets can be enough for an individual.

Overall, sleep is a combination of biological and neurological processes, which can also be affected by one’s stress level, work routine or even caffeine.

A study conducted by the Sleep Foundation concluded that it is not possible to pinpoint an exact amount of sleep that is required by people of different ages. However, there’s exist a minimum to a maximum amount of ‘recommended’ hours of sleep to make your life simple.

Newborns (0-3 months): Sleep range narrowed to 14-17 hours each day Infants (4-11 months): Sleep range widened two hours to 12-15 hours Toddlers (1-2 years): Sleep range widened by one hour to 11-14 hours Preschoolers (3-5): Sleep range widened by one hour to 10-13 hours School-age children (6-13): Sleep range widened by one hour to 9-11 hours Teenagers (14-17): Sleep range widened by one hour to 8-10 hours Younger adults (18-25): Sleep range is 7-9 hours Adults (26-64): Sleep range is 7-9 hours Older adults (65+): Sleep range is 7-8 hours Although, it’s important to figure out how many hours of sleep works best for you, and stick to a routine.
